This is the Chatham Arts Council’s first in a monthly series focusing on arts events in Chatham County that are not to be missed. Painting: Peony, by Cindy Bainbridge.
There’s something special about stepping into the spaces where makers create. The 22nd Annual Chatham Studio Tour offers visitors a peek into those places where that magic happens. Folks who embark on the Chatham Studio Tour may choose to explore as many as 38 different locations where 47 artists make 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional works of art in a variety of media including paint, clay, wood, fiber, metal, glass, photography, and mixed media.
In addition to driving across the beautiful Chatham countryside, Studio Tour takers will see paintings, functional and non-functional pottery, sculpture, furniture, jewelry, neon, wearable art, and more.
We recently caught up with Christie Minchew, board chair of the Chatham Artists Guild, to ask a couple of questions about the tour.
How has the event grown and changed over the years?
Some of our artists have been in our Guild for 22 years while there are also emerging artists joining us for the first time this year.
What might folks find surprising about the Studio Tour?
It’s free! Our event has consistently featured professional, high-quality art and the ability for the public to see the studio environments where artists create their art and talk to the artist personally — all for free!
Visitors may notice in these stops the unique light, the innovative room layouts, great storage ideas, inventive décor—and get a touch of that creative magic to take home. So snag a homemade snack while perusing art. Talk with the artists about their work, their inspirations, their methods—and do some holiday shopping.
