We explore a variety of guided dance form and choreography as well as freedance co-created by participants. SUMMARY:The Works of Rita Baldwin and Debbie Englund: Serendipity in Paint and Clay
DESCRIPTION:The Pittsboro Gallery of Arts is pleased to present the works of Rita Baldwin and Debbie Englund\, in a Featured Artists Show that will be on display from Monday\, October 27th through Sunday\, November 23rd. There will be a reception on Friday\, November 21st\, from 5-8pm. \nFor more than twenty years\, Rita Baldwin has been experimenting with capturing landscapes in oil\, using various impressionistic styles to depict the beauty of Chatham County. She began by creating Plein Air paintings in various locations\, then continued painting from reference photos in her studio. In the last few years\, though\, Baldwin has seen a change in her work.  \nBaldwin writes\, “My direction has morphed into using less reference and more creative divergence from the realistic scene. Since this change\, I have found more joy in painting because I’m allowing the painting to take on a life of its own. As a result\, there are many surprises and unintended directions that appear in the finished work.” \nDebbie Englund finds inspiration from nature\, creating ceramic pieces that\, “reference the grace and elegance of organic forms.” Her White Vessels have surfaces that are carved with beautiful\, undulating lines\, and flow upward into petal-like structures. Englund writes\, “The petals move and bend in unexpected ways with the heat of the kiln\, creating unique forms.”  \nEnglund also creates Sagger Vessels using terra sigillata\, a very fine slip\, that allows these simple\, organic forms to be finished with a highly polished surface. These pieces are colored using soluble salts fired in a Raku kiln. Englund writes\, “My focus in this work is on the processes used to create it\, not necessarily in controlling the outcome. Each finished piece informs the next\, so my work is ever-changing and often follows its own path.” \nBoth Debbie Englund and Rita Baldwin have embraced the notion of letting their work go where it wants—using years of experience with these materials to leave room for surprise and intuitive decisions\, with the result of an increased joy in creation. SUMMARY:Slow Flow Yoga @ The Plant
DESCRIPTION:This slow-flow vinyasa class is focused on building strength and encouraging flexibility. Class begins with a short grounding and centering exercise during which students are guided into their breathwork practice\, followed by gentle movements to warm up the body. We’ll then move through modified sun salutations and standing postures\, after which\, inversions will be offered to support the circulatory system. The class will end with seated and reclined postures to cool the body down and prepare for savasana. Modifications are offered throughout practice\, and all levels are welcome! \nThis class will meet outside on the lawn in front of the stage\, or in Building 2 in the event of rain. If you have any questions\, head into Fair Game Beverage Company and someone there will show you where to go.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening with Violinist Jennifer Curtis in Fair Game’s Wheelhouse on Friday\, November 28\, 7:30 PM! \nComposer/performer Jennifer Curtis has been described as a “multi genre maverick” by the San Diego union tribune. Her second solo concert in Carnegie Hall was described by the New York Times as “one of the gutsiest and most individual recital programs\,” and she was celebrated as “an artist of keen intelligence and taste\, well worth watching out for.” \nAs a violinist Jennifer has won the milka-astral grand prize for violin\, Juilliard concerto competitions and competed in Austria at the international Brahms competition. \nShe has appeared as a soloist with the Simon Bolivar Orchestra in Venezuela\, performed her own mini concerto with the Knights Chamber Orchestra\, been presented as a soloist at Carnegie’s Weil Hall\, Philadelphia‘a Kimmel center and Academy of music\, given world premieres at the Mostly Mozart Festival at Lincoln Center; collaborated with composer John Adams at the Library of Congress; appeared at Giverny international festival de musique de chamber\, Spoleto Festival\, El Festival de las Artes Esénias in Peru\, and many other festivals worldwide. \nAn improviser\, composer\, and multi-instrumentalist\, Jennifer was a member of the acclaimed new music group; International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE) for 14 years. \nShe appears on many recordings such as Invisible Ritual with Tyshawn Sorey\, for which pitchfork magazine wrote that “Curtis’s range as a soloist is a revelation.” Other recordings such as Routes of Evanescence with Ariana Kim\, include her compositions. \nCurrently\, Jennifer is finishing up an album of rarely heard repertoire by violinist/composer George Enescu. She has given American premeires of his solo violin works and performed many times in Romania in his honor. \nAs a composer\, Jennifer has been in residence at Cornell\, composed in India for classical dance and been presented at Spoleto Festival Italy and Verbier\, where she joined the Curtis Orchestra during their residency. She has been part of multiple residencies at the Baryshnikov arts center in New York City as composer/performer and improviser. \nAn educator with a focus on music as humanitarian aid\, Jennifer has also collaborated with musical shamen of the Andes\, improvised for live radio from the interior of the Amazon jungle\, and taught and collaborated with Kurdish refugees in Turkey. She has given her masterclass on the Art of Interpretation through improvisation and applied music theory at Oberlin Conservatory\, San Francisco Conservatory\, Cornell and more. \nJennifer teaches violin at Duke University\, performs regularly with the North Carolina Symphony and plays on a 1777 Vincenzo Panormo violin. Her formidable teachers were Robert Mann\, Itzhak Perlman and Don Weilerstein.

SUMMARY:Slow Flow Yoga @ The Plant
DESCRIPTION:This slow-flow vinyasa class is focused on building strength and encouraging flexibility. Class begins with a short grounding and centering exercise during which students are guided into their breathwork practice\, followed by gentle movements to warm up the body. We’ll then move through modified sun salutations and standing postures\, after which\, inversions will be offered to support the circulatory system. The class will end with seated and reclined postures to cool the body down and prepare for savasana. Modifications are offered throughout practice\, and all levels are welcome! \nThis class will meet outside on the lawn in front of the stage\, or in Building 2 in the event of rain. We explore a variety of guided dance form and choreography as well as freedance co-created by participants. DESCRIPTION:Zumba Fitness is a dance inspired\, instructor led fitness class that feels like a party on the dance floor. Move and groove to international and latin rhythms from around the world while learning new dance steps in the process. Start off with feet\, add arms\, then start follow the pattern shown through non-verbal direction at the front of the class. Tanja has been teaching Zumba fitness classes since 2012 in and around Chatham County. She also teaches Zumba Gold classes for those who need a little less intensity\, have balance issues or injuries\, and still want to party\, but in a safe environment. The event is free and self-guided\, offering a wonderful chance to find unique holiday gifts. \nThe 33rd Annual Chatham Artists Guild Studio Tour takes place December 6–7 and 13–14 (Saturdays 10 PM–5 AM\, Sundays 12 PM–5 AM). Enjoy two weekends of art\, inspiration\, and scenic drives through Chatham County\, NC\, as 59 local artists—including 14 participating for the first time—open their studios to visitors. \nThe Guild’s professional artists produce an inspiring variety of fine art across different media\, including stunning oil\, acrylic\, and watercolor paintings; captivating drawings; exquisite glass and ceramic works; enchanting jewelry; striking photography; and innovative mixed-media and digital creations.
