Marcela Slade is a local artist, designer, teacher and curator based in Carrboro, NC. Slade moved back into the area in 2016. She is a US-Colombian with additional multi-cultural background. Slade lived in Barcelona, Spain for 8 years, where she debuted her career and most recently Quito, Ecuador.
In Quito she taught art and design at Universidad Catolica del Ecuador and Universidad San Fransisco de Quito. She also owned xerrajeros galeria studio shop in Cumbaya. The gallery housed her studio and her husband, Christian Molina’s, architectural practice. Xerrajeros was dedicated to the sales, creation and promotion of architecture, art and design.
As gallery owner, Slade was able to represent re-known and up and coming artists. She learned a lot from the artists she represented but specifically the Ecuadorian painter Luigi Stornaiolo. Slade improved her painting through assisting Stornaiolo in his own creations and projects.
Some of the pieces in this show were created in xerrajeros or at Stornaiolo’s studio. The finished pieces are a mix of different series created from 2013 until today. They convey life experiences as well as fascinations like love and literature.
Her style has been categorized as expressionism with an instrumentalist twist. Anatomy is not depicted as it should be. Slade’s strokes guide her to pull out what she sees and feels.
Many of the prices in this show are reduced as Slade is trying to clean up her house-studio and continue creating new work. There are also several Works in Progress (W.I.P.).
She will have a solo show at the NC Arts Incubator in Siler City, NC from October 19 thru November 13 and a sladesign Fashion Show in collaboration with Ron Liberti in December.
Sladesign is Slade’s own clothing line and accessories of handmade one-of-and kind pieces. Liberti’s silkscreens will be featured on some of the dresses and skirts and he will compliment the show with his silk-screened art and more.
There will be two events for the Slade Liberti Show: December 13 at The Station in Carrboro and December 20 at Smelt Art Gallery in Pittsboro. The show will remain for the rest of the year to view and purchase at Smelt after the December 20th show.
Slade has a BFA in Graphic Design and MFA in Illustration from the Savannah College of Art and Design. She currently serves on the Abundance NC board and also works as their event coordinator. She is the coordinator and curator of Smelt, teaches private art and design classes and is a board member AT LARGE for the Orange County Arts Commission.
We at the Chatham Arts Council are delighted to provide the only online calendar exclusively dedicated to Chatham County arts events–performing, literary, and visual arts. Get out there and get inspired!
