Zach Pekar presents The Dunes of Aderstan

November 17, 2018 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

Zach Pekar journeys to McIntyre’s to present his newest book, Dunes of Aderstan. Travel to a post-apocalyptic future where friends Jayko and Savi learn about Old World traditions, mannerisms, and language so they can one day travel back to see it for themselves. When they finally get the chance they go to Aderstan, a society known for its half-human half-animal forms and the beast traders who thrive off of them. At the heart of Aderstan’s society are the high priests, who utilize human-simian half-breeds to enforce their increasingly strict form of coercive and violent religion. This religion also forces female half-breeds to serve as the sex slaves known as selevaars within Aderstanian society at large. As Jayko and Savi pursue their covert research, both become enmeshed in a movement for emancipation by the selevaars. This fight for freedom forces them to question where the line is drawn to separate human from beast, research from exploitation, and social cohesion from self-determination.

Zach Pekar is a musician, writer, mountain biker, and environmental scientist. He combines his love for all forms of art with his background in science to craft fiction that aims to entertain while exploring the nature and trajectory of humanity and the planet. He earned his master’s degree in public health and doctorate in environmental science at the University of North Carolina. While he has backpacked through much of Europe and seen a good bit of India, Chile and New Zealand, he still calls Chapel Hill home, where he dedicates himself to his family, friends, and creativity, usually in that order.
