DESCRIPTION:The Pittsboro Gallery of Arts is pleased to present the work of fused glass artist\, Janet Place\, in a Featured Artist Show that will be on display from Tuesday\, May 5th through Sunday\, May 31st\, 2026. There will be a reception on Friday\, May 15th\, from 5-8 pm. \nPlace draws her inspiration from two distinct sources—the flowing\, transparent style of Murano glass\, and the vibrant\, organic forms of mid-century modern design. Looking at her work\, it is easy to see the blend of these inspirations—her beautiful\, kaleidoscope-like colors are sometimes blended and flowing\, and other times filled with surprising pops of shape and color that will take the viewer directly to that mid-century design period. \nPlease join us in celebrating the work of this talented artist. DESCRIPTION:The Pittsboro Gallery of Arts is pleased to present the photography of Eric Saunders in a Featured Artist Show that will be on display from Tuesday\, April 7th through Sunday\, May 3rd\, 2026. There will be a reception on Friday\, April 17th\, from 5-8pm. \nEric Saunders’ work transports viewers in a way that allows us to view familiar scenes through a new lens\, turning images of natural and urban subjects into abstract art. Saunders writes\, “In general\, my subject matter in photography is outdoor landscapes and architecture. I try to communicate the beauty of abstract art\, and/or the beauty or intrigue of transient moments in nature and life.” \nFor this show\, Saunders will be displaying large photographs on canvas\, along with smaller framed and unframed archival ink prints and cards. SUMMARY:Coy Quakenbush: Featured Artist for March at The Pittsboro Gallery of Arts
DESCRIPTION:The Pittsboro Gallery of Arts is pleased to announce Coy Quakenbush as its Featured Artist for the month of March\, presenting a diverse body of hand-built pottery and sculptural works that bridge tradition\, experimentation\, and form.\nThe exhibition will include modern Mata Ortiz–inspired pottery\, sculptural vessels\, and freestanding sculptural works\, alongside pit-fired and raku pieces that emphasize surface\, fire\, and organic variation. Also featured are new Peruvian-inspired whistle vessels\, extending Quakenbush’s ongoing study of ancient sound-producing ceramic forms and their sculptural possibilities.\nCoy Quakenbush has worked with clay since the late 1990s; his work reflects a deep respect for historical pottery traditions while remaining open to discovery\, evolution\, and experimentation through process. SUMMARY:The Works of Rita Baldwin and Debbie Englund: Serendipity in Paint and Clay
DESCRIPTION:The Pittsboro Gallery of Arts is pleased to present the works of Rita Baldwin and Debbie Englund\, in a Featured Artists Show that will be on display from Monday\, October 27th through Sunday\, November 23rd. There will be a reception on Friday\, November 21st\, from 5-8pm. \nFor more than twenty years\, Rita Baldwin has been experimenting with capturing landscapes in oil\, using various impressionistic styles to depict the beauty of Chatham County. She began by creating Plein Air paintings in various locations\, then continued painting from reference photos in her studio. In the last few years\, though\, Baldwin has seen a change in her work.  \nBaldwin writes\, “My direction has morphed into using less reference and more creative divergence from the realistic scene. Since this change\, I have found more joy in painting because I’m allowing the painting to take on a life of its own. As a result\, there are many surprises and unintended directions that appear in the finished work.” \nDebbie Englund finds inspiration from nature\, creating ceramic pieces that\, “reference the grace and elegance of organic forms.” Her White Vessels have surfaces that are carved with beautiful\, undulating lines\, and flow upward into petal-like structures. Englund writes\, “The petals move and bend in unexpected ways with the heat of the kiln\, creating unique forms.”  \nEnglund also creates Sagger Vessels using terra sigillata\, a very fine slip\, that allows these simple\, organic forms to be finished with a highly polished surface. These pieces are colored using soluble salts fired in a Raku kiln. Englund writes\, “My focus in this work is on the processes used to create it\, not necessarily in controlling the outcome. Each finished piece informs the next\, so my work is ever-changing and often follows its own path.” \nBoth Debbie Englund and Rita Baldwin have embraced the notion of letting their work go where it wants—using years of experience with these materials to leave room for surprise and intuitive decisions\, with the result of an increased joy in creation.
