It’s that time of year again. Spring abounds as trees sprout leaves, flowers bud, and cool rain showers cleanse. Not surprisingly, spring concerts are in full bloom. Budding young singers are ready to soothe your souls and lift your spirits on Thursday, May 11th during the Sisters’ Voices Annual Spring Concert. You won’t want to miss the outstanding finale to their 2016-17 season. You will not be disappointed.
Artistic Director Leandra Merea Strope enchants audiences through her graceful conducting of Sisters’ Voices, a choral community of girls grades 2nd through 8th. Her vast knowledge of and experience with conducting choirs comes from her time at Yale School of Music, Indiana University, and Meredith College. The repertoire is delightfully unique in the sense that audiences will enjoy a vast array of world music from different cultures and time periods. Sisters’ Voices is known as being a cohesive singing ensemble that is technically beautiful, musically educated, and has a reputation for excellence. Leandra explains what it means to her.
“This semester we are learning several pieces from Latin America. Studying music from other countries broadens us, allows us a glimpse into another culture and ways of thinking, and connects us to people in profound and sometimes surprising ways. Our understanding of our Spanish language pieces has been deepened by Sisters’ Voices families with roots in Spanish-speaking countries.”
Leandra has been intentional about the focus of Sisters’ Voices, ensuring that it is a community of girls, within which each is known and supported while being challenged to grow as a musician and as a person.
“In rehearsal and in performance we practice sharing our voices with each other, each singer welcome to demonstrate music she is working to master. In this way, the girls come to know each other’s voices well and to understand that each voice is essential to the sound our ensemble creates, that without any one voice we are a different ensemble. This truth carries through to our families, circles of friends, classes, and communities — every single person’s voice matters completely.”
The girls meet weekly to practice pieces, learn the history and culture from where those pieces come, and develop their talents. They perform two main concerts a year, a Winter concert and a Spring concert. There are also summer programs available for girls interested in Opera, Glee, and Folk music.
