Washed in the Water and the Blood: My Experience of Ukraine in the 1990s

November 11, 2023 @ 5:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Free

In 1994, three years after the Soviet Union dissolved, writer and musician Brenda Linton traveled with a team to Ukraine to help facilitate the country’s transition to a democratic state. On Saturday, November 11, 2023, from 5:30–8:00pm at The Plant, Linton will read from her memoir and perform several songs with Elizabeth Haddix, Mel Girard, and Rick Lassiter. Washed in the Water and the Blood is a fascinating chronicle of Linton’s professional and personal relationships with members of a Ukrainian delegation to Boston and government officials in the City of Kharkiv. Her lyrical writing provides western audiences with a heart-to-heart experience of Ukrainian culture and demonstrates the resolve of the Ukrainian people to preserve their sovereignty amid Russian aggression.

The reading will be followed by a Q&A session with a panel of experts who worked in Ukraine and Russia in the mid-1990s. The event is free. Information will be provided about making donations to support Ukraine.
