If there ever was a year to commit to buying gifts from local artists rather than big box stores or online retailers, this is certainly it! The past two years have been very hard for local artists to find markets or opportunities to sell their wares, as many were cancelled or postponed. But this year, look no further than the upcoming Bazaar Night Markets at The Plant for all of your gift-giving needs. With two upcoming opportunities to shop in November and December (and grab something delicious to eat while enjoying local music), you can certainly make a big dent in your holiday shopping list without having to worry about any shipping delays.
On Friday, November 19, the second Bazaar Night Market will be held at The Plant in Pittsboro from 5-9pm. If you haven’t yet discovered The Plant, you are missing out on one of the best kept secrets in Pittsboro. “The Plant is an eclectic, quirky, and fun venue located in a renovated aluminum smelting industrial plant from the 1980’s,” says Tami Schwerin, co-owner of The Plant. “It used to be a place where they made parts for fighter jets, and it’s now a 17-acre destination with all sorts of craft beverages, farm-to-fork food, hemp clothing, coffee, bike rental, axe throwing, and tons of outdoor space for people to roam.”
During the holiday shopping season, having an outdoor venue has been a lifeline for many local artists. As Tiana Thurber, owner of Pittsboro’s Reclamation shop and co-founder of the Night Market, notes, “Once we were able to get back to gathering, my friend Beth Davis and I put our heads together to create our own market in Pittsboro, which is sponsored by my store Reclamation. We wanted the focus to be on local vendors and give the community a reason to get together in an outdoor setting with food and live music while they discover new artists and businesses.”
These types of events have been especially important for artists who don’t own their own stores or studios. “Many artists and businesses who don’t own a brick and mortar store depend on these types of markets to advertise and sell their goods,” says Tiana. “With Covid, there hasn’t been much of an opportunity to join these types of events, so we’ve had to get creative to promote ourselves. If we continue to have outdoor events that encourage discovery of unique products that are only available locally, we will also promote and support our communities’ businesses, artists, and craftspeople.”
In addition to the large selection of holiday gifts from local artisans, a vintage flea market section, food trucks, and live bands, all of the establishments at The Plant will be open all evening. Come grab a drink at Fairgame Beverage, BMC Brewing, or Starrlight Mead, check out the wares at Hempsmith, order some delicious food from Copeland Springs, and try your hand at axe throwing at Chatham Axes!
