Go See This: Love’s Creek Truck-and-Trailer Roving Performance

As Chatham Park continues to develop its community, they remain dedicated to supporting local art in Chatham County. As part of that commitment, Chatham Park is powering our Go See This series. They join us in inviting you to Go See This . . .

When the pandemic forced many artists to stop performing live, we at Chatham Arts Council scratched our heads as to how we could help artists keep working and help bring arts back into communities. Out of that brainstorming–and inspiration from creative ideas like mobile performances by the Chatham Rabbits–the Truck-and-Trailer Roving Performances were born.

We gathered a team of performers and drove through neighborhoods, spreading music and bubbles. Kids and parents alike came out of their homes, grinning at the sights and sounds.

With the generous support of Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina, we are pleased to be able to bring another Truck-and-Trailer Roving Performance to the Love’s Creek neighborhood on Monday, November 7 (with a rain date of Thursday, November 10), where we visited last November. This time, we’ve got a new line-up of performers, including musicians Larry & Joe and Paperhand Puppet Intervention (who you may remember from the fun parade they led through ClydeFEST this year or from this Meet This Artist feature on puppeteer Jan Berger).

We’re excited about having the talented music duo Larry & Joe join us for the first time. Larry and Joe have been performing together since the end of 2021, and they’ve quickly become popular performers in the Triangle. “They met through a mutual friend at the end of 2021,” says manager Kayla Oelhafen. “Joe invited Larry, after seeing videos of him playing, to an arts residency Joe was doing at The Fruit in Durham. The connection was immediate, and they decided then and there that they would form a duo. Since that time, they’ve been working hard and are excited to hear the album they just recorded.”

What makes this duo special is the combination of their musical backgrounds. Larry Bellorín is Venezuelan, and he specializes in Llanera music. Joe Troop is a musician, singer, and songwriter originally from Winston-Salem, North Carolina, who spent a decade living in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Their secret to making music together? Kayla attributes it to honoring the musical traditions of both cultures. “It’s like a cross-cultural conversation where each of them brings different rhythmic and melodic concepts to the table with a willingness to teach the other,” says Kayla.

If you’re unable to stroll with us through Love’s Creek to see Larry & Joe perform on November 7, here are a few more places to see them this year:

  • Diamante Latino Awards on Saturday, October 29 in Cary
  • The Crown Theatre in Greensboro on Friday, November 4
  • The Fruit in Durham with the UNC Salsa Band on Tuesday, November 22
  • The Tosco Holiday Show in Charlotte on Monday, December 19
  • Snug Harbor in Charlotte on Friday, December 30

We hope to see you in Love’s Creek!
