This is the fourth in a nine-part series spotlighting the Chatham County Arts Council’s Grassroots Grant recipients for 2014. The Grassroots Grant Program allows the Chatham County Arts Council to work with our own community members to determine where artists and arts funding can make the greatest impact locally.
Imagine this; a day dedicated to all things BOOKS! The Chatham County Arts Council is connecting children and families with reading via our Grassroots Grants Program! Child Care Networks, a grant recipient this year, will use its grant dollars to pay local artists to promote literacy and art at their Day of the Books Festival on April 26th.
Child Care Networks is a Chatham County non-profit working to ensure that safe, nurturing childcare is available to every Chatham County child, regardless of circumstance. They work with service providers on ways to improve programming as well as connecting them with necessary trainings for state licensing.
We sat down with Child Care Network’s Bilingual Child Care Liaison, Luis Melodelgado, to pick his brain about Child Care Networks, the arts, and life in Chatham County. Here’s what he had to say about…
…the importance of the arts in Child Care Network’s programming: “Art enriches the lives of children and enhances the community making it a better place to work and live.”
…in an ideal world: “Children would be safe and nurtured so they can be productive healthy adults in the future. Children should grow up happy so they can continue to dream.”
…life in Chatham County: “It’s beautiful; the rural and urban aspects are full of creative people who are interested in social change.”
…artists he’s worked with: “Giving. Knowledgeable. Fun!”

The Grassroots Arts Program is offered by Chatham County Arts Council through the generous assistance of the North Carolina Arts Council, an agency funded by the State of North Carolina and the National Endowment of the Arts, which believes that a great nation deserves great art.
