This month’s “Go See This” is written by guest blogger Selbe Bartlett.
On summer Fridays in the friendly Chatham County community of Bynum, people are sitting in their rocking chairs or relaxing on their blankets enjoying the sounds of musicians from across the state. What are you doing this Friday night?
If you find yourself yearning for a relaxing, informal, and intimate setting where you can enjoy music in your own way then check out Bynum Front Porch Music Series. Every Friday night from May through the end of August, Bynum Front Porch invites musicians to share sounds of jazz, swing, Americana, rockabilly, bluegrass, folk, and gospel music.
With the help of the Chatham Arts Council, Bynum residents started the free music series back in 2001. Residents wanted to ensure their neighborhood gathering place remained even though the general store was closing. Neighbors worked to create a nonprofit organization called Bynum Front Porch so that they could continue to get together and enjoy the warmth of friendship, family, and community. The music series hosts approximately 1,700 guests over the course of the four summer months. Donations are appreciated so that these fun Friday night family events can continue every year. Donations not only support the events and upkeep of grounds and buildings but also help to support two $1,000 scholarships for Chatham County students.
There are nine more events in the Bynum Front Porch Music Series this summer. Take a break one Friday night, grab a friend and a blanket, and find your way to the friendly little town of Bynum in Chatham County. Come early to find a parking spot and grab some grub from the local food trucks.
