Erin and the good folks of Child Care Networks are gearing up for April 25, when they put on their annual Day of the Books / el Dia de los Libros, an outdoor literacy festival for kids. Yes, reading is at the heart of this community-building event, but there’s a whole lot of other fun stuff going on, too.
Arts at Day of the Book / el Dia de los Libros
Erin and her colleague Luis Melodelgado, bilingual child care liaison, share that their “ability to include arts makes Day of the Books more fun” while arts activities easily bridge gaps in language and reading ability and comprehension.
Staff and volunteers at Day of the Books gently nudge kids from being passive observers to engaging with one another and working collaboratively. Young people will get to sing silly songs with The Silly Band. Children will thump and rumble as they learn about rhythm and drum beats with percussionist Beverly Botsford. And they’ll fold and mold to create hats and masks as professional puppetmaker K.T. Childers provides guidance. There’s instrument-making and a Joyful Parade, too.
Alongside all this hands-on fun, bilingual volunteers will spread out blankets and gather kids around to listen to storytellers spin tales and favorite books read aloud.
How It All Started
The focus on the children makes sense. Day of the Books / el Día de los Libros evolved from an annual Mexican celebration known as Children’s Day. Traditionally held in April, children’s day honors the importance of loving, accepting, and appreciating children.
Children’s Day was taken to another level in the U.S. when in 1996 Pat Mora, a Latina author of poetry, nonfiction and children’s books, set out to establish a community-based, family literacy initiative. From that effort, Day of the Book was born.
In 2003, Childcare Networks, a local nonprofit child care resource and referral agency that serves parents and educators in Chatham, Harnett, Johnston, Lee and Wayne Counties, brought Day of the Books / el Día de los Libros to Chatham. In 2011, the nonprofit was awarded their first grant to add arts to the event, and the festival has become a richer experience ever since.

Day of the Books / el Día de los Libros promotes arts and literacy for families of all linguistic backgrounds and serves to strengthen cultural and community ties. Erin and Luis shared that one teacher having just attended her first Day of the Books Festival breathlessly expressed the thrill of finding such an inclusive event for all children. She told Erin and Luis then that she can’t wait to come back next year and will tell all her parents that they “have to go!”
Sound like a good time? Heck yeah, it is! And at the end of a great day, every child gets a free new, bilingual book to take home. A very cool party favor.

Arte en El Día de los Libros

El personal y los voluntarios en el Día de los Libros empuje suavemente los niños de ser observadores pasivos de comprometerse con uno al otro y trabajar de manera conjunta. Los jóvenes pueden cantar canciones divertidas con The Silly Band. Los niños aprenden sobre ritmo y latidos del tambor con el percusionista Beverly Botsford. Cómo todo esto Comenzó
La atención a los niños tiene sentido. El Día de los Libros evolucionó de una celebración Mexicana anual conocida como el Día de Niños. Tradicionalmente sostenido en abril, el Día de Niños honra la importancia de amar, aceptar y apreciar los niños.
El Día de Niños fue llevado a otro nivel en los Estados Unidos cuando en 1996 Pat Mora, una Latina autor de poesía, ficción y libros de niños, se dispuso a establecer la iniciativa de lectura familiar, basada en la comunidad. De ese esfuerzo, nació el Día de los Libros. Una bolsa con un libro para llevar a casa, este niño está listo en El Día de los Libros. Erin y Luis compartieron que un maestro, sólo después de asistir a su primer día de la fiesta de libros, expresó la emoción de encontrar un evento incluyente para todos los niños. Le dijo a Erin y Luis, a continuación, que ella no puede esperar para volver el año que viene y a los padres que “tienen que ir!”
Suena como un buen momento? Es! Y al final de un gran día, cada niño recibe un libro gratis — nuevo y bilingüe — para llevar a casa. Un fantástico recuerdo de la fiesta.
