As new members of our Chatham County community, Chatham Park is powering our Go See This series this year because art is an integral part of Chatham County’s identity. They join us in inviting you to Go See This . . .
Grab your shawl, boots, and basket, and head on over “Into The Woods” at Jordan Matthews Auditorium on Thursday, November 14th through Saturday, November 16th. JMArts Foundation is sponsoring this high school rendition of James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim’s Broadway hit. It’s a fabulous tale of family, fortune, failure, and friendships.
All of the fall musicals at Jordan Matthews High School are produced with help and support from JMArts Foundation. The students and staff put together this production of “Into The Woods” without an on-staff drama teacher, utilizing the support from JMArts to purchase performance rights and bring in skilled and experienced community members to create what is sure to be another sold out event.
The actors have been busy rehearsing while the tech crew and art students are working hard to create the props and stage materials. Cows and giants and trees: OH MY! Via an exciting arts residency with artist Donovan Zimmerman of Paperhand Puppet Intervention, students are learning to create original puppets–very large puppets. We, at the Chatham Arts Council, are delighted to support this work with a Grassroots Arts Grant this year.
Some of these students have never had the opportunity to work with a professional artist before. In the time they are spending with Donovan to create the “silent” characters like Milky White the Cow, they’re learning about performance art–but also what goes into a full production using design and space concepts, mathematics, history, and so much more.
The student-actors also had a special opportunity to attend a videoconference with Jessie Austrian from Fiasco Theater in New York City. They learned from and asked questions of Jessie, who was the driving force behind an award-winning off-Broadway production of “Into The Woods” in 2015. Jessie shared her experiences working with Stephen Sondheim, theater legend and co-creator of “Into The Woods,” on a new production of “Merrily We Roll Along.”
