Spotlight! Connecting the Community with Summer Music

This is the final entry in a nine-part series spotlighting the Chatham County Arts Council’s Grassroots Grant recipients for 2014. The Grassroots Grant Program allows the Chatham County Arts Council to work with our own community members to determine where artists and arts funding can make the greatest impact locally.

BynumFrontPorch2The Chatham County Arts Council is delighted to help connect folks to the Summer Music Series at Bynum Front Porch via a Grassroots Arts Grant. Bynum Front Porch, a recipient this year, uses its grant dollars to pay local musicians to rock out at its Summer Music Series and Front Porch Pickin’ programs for appreciative local audiences.

The Bynum Front Porch board also works to provide a community gathering space for programming in and around their authentic general store located in a quaint mill village of Bynum on the banks of the mighty Haw River. Bynum Front Porch (BFP) hosts community events and other activities like am open jam session and storytelling for kids. Every year, BFP provides two educational grants for two graduating Chatham County high school seniors — one for a student who is choosing to pursue the arts in college, and the other for a student participating in the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program.

We chatted with board member Sharon LaPalme, to pick get her view on several topics that affect Bynum Front Porch. Here’s what she had to say about…

…the importance of the arts in Bynum Front Porch programming:
“We provide community members and visitors to our summer music series and other music-based programming the opportunity to enjoy great musical artists and even hone their own musical skills at our Front Porch Pickin.”

…in an ideal world:
“Fundraising would be easier! There would be many other ways in which the world could be ideal, but this does occupy a lot of the BFP’s board members’ time and thoughts.”

…life in Chatham County:
“I love Chatham County’s natural beauty, living in Bynum, and our connection with the Haw River.”

…artists she’s worked with:
“Talented, diverse, fun.”

The Grassroots Arts Program is offered by Chatham County Arts Council through the generous assistance of the North Carolina Arts Council, an agency funded by the State of North Carolina and the National Endowment of the Arts, which believes that a great nation deserves great art.
