Go See This: Hot & Blue Folk and Roots Revue

The 2nd Annual Hot & Blue Folk and Roots Revue and Spicy Wing Cook-off at the City Tap in Pittsboro on Sunday, July 15 promises to be much more than a mouthful! Starting with a Spicy Wing Cook-off at 1 p.m., the afternoon rolls right into a summer shindig of 5 fabulous musical performances sure to make Hot & Blue 2 the most fun you can have and see in a day.

Featured performer Big Ron Hunter will headline the afternoon’s music. Big Ron, known as the world’s happiest bluesman, is a Music Maker Relief Foundation artist hailing from Winston-Salem. He was taught guitar by his sharecropper father and fine-tuned his skills while working as a maintenance man, practicing in the privacy of his closet-sized office. Big Ron plays original songs, with a “sweet and melodic voice and his original brand of uplifting and hard-banging acoustic blues”.

The afternoon’s full line-up of musicians features Arcus Hyatt, Carmen Bliss, Laura Jane Vincent, and The River Otters playing a variety of their own work. Hot & Blue 2 is the inspiration of Stephan Meyers, a musician and artist from Pittsboro also known as the creative genius behind Chatham Arts Council’s ClydeFEST, which features his work in the hand-build games and colorful field design. Hot & Blue 2 captures the same old-timey, colorful flavor of a community arts event that characterizes the annual spring children’s festival, only for big kids who love their fun and games with a cold beer and some spicy wings.

Stephen has a passion for creating events with what he calls “cross-pollination” through the community. To that end, he has carefully selected sponsors for Hot & Blue 2 who believe in the value of a small town and its grassroots arts initiatives. This year’s Hot & Blue sponsors include Pittsboro’s own Cackalacky, Carr Amps, Small Museum of Folk Art, New Horizons West, Mosaic, The City Tap and Oskar Blues Brewery from Brevard.

Every good event in Chatham County also needs to benefit one of our many vital non-profits who make our community shine. Hot & Blue is no exception, featuring a raffle for a gift basket sponsored by Cackalacky to benefit Chatham’s CORA Food Pantry.

More on wings! The Spicy Wing Cook-off is the best opportunity you’ll get in Pittsboro this year to show off your secret wing recipe… the judges will award the best wing with a bucket full of goodies from New Horizons West, Cackalacky and Oskar Blues just before headliner Big Ron Hunter cranks up at 4:00 p.m. Don’t have a recipe? Just bring your appetite!

Looking for a good time? Easy! Come on out on July 15. Hot & Blue 2 will bring the fun!
