Meet This Artist: Dr. Anthony D. Jackson

The arts didn’t just enter my life; the arts saved my life. We have to have a next generation of kids who understand respect and can create beauty. And I think that’s what’s missing right now. That’s where kindness is planted.

Meet This Artist: Jordan Pickett, Country Music Singer/Songwriter

Smiling young white man from shoulders up. He wears a brown cowboy hat and a blue collared shirt, and he's in a wheat field.

Well, my Grandpa passed away in 2017, and that was when I wrote my first song. I kinda uncovered my outlet for emotions and also my gift from God of music, writing, and playing. Didn’t know I really had it ‘til that time.

Go See This: Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf?

Actor on a stage performs as Little Red Riding Hood.

“So many people immediately dismiss opera when they’ve never actually seen one,” says Rachel Stenbuck, performer and educator with the North Carolina Opera. “I’ve found with my students through the years of teaching, that it very much depended on how it was presented.”

Meet This Artist: Steve Fagan, working with metal, wood, stained glass, and anything else that interests him

Smiling white man in gray henley shirt looking down at his drafting in his metal and woodworking shop.

Ever since he was a kid, Fagan has been a doer. Want to play punk guitar? He figured it out. Want to switch to old-time guitar? He figured it out. Want to build a cabin? He figured it out. Want to build a hydroelectric generator in a stream? Want to work with wood? Glass? Want to work with metal and wood and glass? Want to build high-dollar decks and mixed-media garden gates and trellises? Want to live as you wish without compromising your ideals? He figured it out.

Go See This: Bynum Front Porch Summer Music Series

When Howie and his country band The Rosewood Bluff returned to the General Store on May 26 for his latest Bynum Front Porch Friday Night Music Series performance, the Hillsborough-based songwriter found the vibe alive and well. “It still very much feels like the country, and honestly in a way that where I grew up kind of doesn’t anymore,” he says.
